Getting to Seward from Anchorage
How to get from Anchorage to Seward for a Kenai Fjords cruise — driving the Seward Highway (~2.5 hours), the Alaska Railroad Coastal Classic train, and bus options.
Every Kenai Fjords cruise departs from Seward, not Anchorage — so if you’re flying into Anchorage (as most visitors do), getting to the harbor is part of the plan. The good news: it’s about 125 miles, and the journey down the Kenai Peninsula is one of the most scenic drives in Alaska. Here are your three options and how to time them (accurate as of July 2026).
Option 1: Drive the Seward Highway (~2.5–3 hours)
Driving is the most flexible option and lets you stop at viewpoints along the way. The Seward Highway runs south from Anchorage — Alaska Route 1 along the edge of Turnagain Arm, then Route 9 into Seward — through the Chugach Mountains and Kenai Peninsula. It carries a rare triple scenic designation (USDA Forest Service Scenic Byway, Alaska Scenic Byway, and All-American Road) and is regularly ranked among the best drives in the country.
Plan for 2.5 to 3 hours without stops, and add time for the many worthwhile pull-offs — Beluga Point, Bird Point, the Portage Valley turn, and Moose Pass. In summer the highway is busy; in shoulder season watch for weather. If you have an early cruise, driving down the night before removes all the risk.
Option 2: Alaska Railroad “Coastal Classic” (summer only)
The Coastal Classic train runs between Anchorage and Seward in summer and is a spectacular trip in its own right — it has been named among National Geographic Traveler’s top North American train rides. It typically departs Anchorage early (around 6:45 AM) and takes roughly 4.5 hours each way, following routes no road reaches, through mountain passes and past glaciers.
It’s slower than driving and runs on a fixed schedule, so it suits travelers who want to relax and sightsee rather than those on a tight cruise connection. Because the morning train can arrive close to midday cruise departures, check that the timing works — or plan the train as a scenic day and cruise the following morning. Book train seats well ahead in peak summer.
Option 3: Bus / Motorcoach Shuttle
Several motorcoach and shuttle services run between Anchorage and Seward in the tourist season, a budget-friendly, hands-off alternative to driving or the train. Exact 2026 operators, schedules and fares change year to year, so confirm current times when you plan — and, as with the train, make sure arrival leaves a comfortable buffer before your cruise check-in.
Timing Your Cruise
However you travel, the golden rule is the same: don’t cut it fine. A weather delay, a moose on the road, or a slow train can cost you a non-refundable morning if you’re arriving the same day. The most relaxed approach is to spend the night in Seward before an early cruise, explore the small-boat harbor and town the evening before, and step aboard rested. If you must come and go in a day, choose a midday or afternoon departure and build in a buffer.
